How it works

Tokenizers split text into pieces that are not words. OpenAI's published rule of thumb is about 4 characters or 0.75 words per token for English; Anthropic states that 1M tokens is roughly 555k words on its current tokenizer. Code, other languages and numbers tokenize less efficiently, so treat these as estimates.

The formula

words = tokens * words_per_token; characters = tokens * chars_per_token; pages = words / 500

Worked example

With the inputs the page opens on:

  • tokens: 100000 tokens
  • tokenizer: openai

gives

  • words: 75,000
  • characters: 400,000
  • pages: 150
  • words per token: 0.75

Questions

Is this exact?
No. Only the vendor's tokenizer gives an exact count. Use this for budgeting and the vendor's token counting endpoint for billing.
