How it works
Software gross margins run 70 to 90 percent; an AI feature whose model cost is a third of the subscription price has already eaten the margin. The break-even price here holds model cost to 30 percent of revenue. Caps on actions, cheaper models for routine actions and caching are the usual levers.
The formula
cost_per_user = actions * llm-api-cost per action; margin = (price - cost) / price; break_even = cost / 0.30Worked example
With the inputs the page opens on:
- monthly active users: 2000
- actions per user per month: 40
- input tokens per action: 2500 tokens
- output tokens per action: 400 tokens
- model: claude-sonnet-5-5
- cached share pct: 40%
- price per user per month: 12 USD
gives
- ai cost per user: $0.284
- monthly ai cost: $568
- gross margin pct: 97.6 %
- break even price: $0.950
- actions covered by price: 1,690
